British designer Matthew Williamson made his US debut on Wednesday as his Fall-Winter 2002 pret a porter collection hit the runway at New York Fashion Week. Supermodels Alek Wek and Eva Herzigova were just two of the high-profile models sporting Matthew’s latest line, as the designer presented multi-coloured creations which echoed the Swinging London of the 1960s.
London-based Matthew, who counts among his celebrity followers Jade Jagger, Kate Moss and Jodie Kidd, brought a taste of his hometown to the show with paisley print and candy-striped trouser suits in velvet, plus Carnaby Street cords in rosy pink and lemon yellow. The designer’s trademark spaghetti-strap mini dresses and camisoles were also present, in a series of sheer frocks with contrasting neon trim and chains at the hip.
The rainbow colours and floral and butterfly appliqué work of his spring collection were reinterpreted, this time in velvet and corduroy. Echoes of the Sixties and Seventies were also evident in his hippie-influenced designs, with shredded chiffon skirts, Indian embroidery and head scarves.
Matthew is gaining a high-profile following across the Atlantic and American pop singer Britney Spears is one of his newest fans. However, though the London-based designer has said the move to NY this season was a “natural” one, he has no plans to permanently move stateside at the moment.
