Ritu Beri, who was commissioned by Nicole Kidman to create her look for the world premier of Moulin Rouge, was appointed on Monday to head the pret-a-porter team at French fashion house Scherrer. The pretty 30-something designer will take over the section from chief designer Stephane Rolland, who wants to concentrate on Scherrer’s haute couture creations.
Ritu, who launched her own label ten years ago, is the current queen of the Indian fashion industry. Nicole, who is just one of her celebrity fans, famously turned down a host of established names and picked the newcomer to design a stunning embroidered number for her Moulin screening at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
A graduate of the National Institute of Fashion and Technology in New Delhi, Ritu is the first designer from the sub-continent to show a couture collection Paris, where she debuted in 1999. Scherrer’s owners, the France Luxury Group, first took an interest in her two years ago, buying her company and promoting her designs in Britain and the United States.
Ritu’s styles often exploit rich traditional Indian craftwork and fabrics, but with an originality and diversity that has set her apart from other designers exploring eastern themes. She will show her first line for Scherrer at the Paris pret-a-porter collections in March.
