Stella McCartney conjured up her old magic when she debuted the second collection from her own house at Paris Fashion Week on Monday.
Stella – who won critical success at the French house Chloe but was panned for her first solo effort six months ago – now looks set to be the main arbiter of hip London chic once again, with a collection of light airy chiffon tops and masculine tailored jackets. The show was, in dad Sir Paul McCartney’s words, “Classy, elegant, chic, amusing, sexy”.
And the former Beatle wasted no time in telling her so. “Stella, listen to me: now that was great,” he said, grabbing his daughter by the arms at the close of the ten-minute presentation. Stella dedicated the new collection to the memories of her mum Linda and George Harrison – whose classic song Something provided the soundtrack.
The show confirmed her ability to create the kind of well-cut trouser and funky asymmetric tops that just fly off store shelves. Gracing the front row with Sir Paul were his fiancée Heather Mills, Gosford Park actress Kristin Scott Thomas and Italian fashion guru Giorgio Armani, who was suitably impressed. “I really like the idea of these jackets that are very masculine in cut but very feminine in colour,” he said.
