Supermodel Christy Turlington and actor/director Edward Burns had planned their dream wedding: an Italian setting, with close friend and U2 front man Bono giving away the bride and an array of stars, including Steven Spielberg on the guest list. However, the romantic nuptials are not to be – the Hollywood couple has decided to call it quits after a year-long engagement.
Insiders say the pair separated last month, and that there were no third parties involved. “They respect and care deeply about one another but they decided they weren’t each other’s perfect life partners,” said a friend.
Rumours of the split circulated after the She’s The One actor hit the Oscar party circuit sans his beautiful fiancée. And the fact that he was spotted chatting up 25-year-old Spanish model Esther Cañadas at one bash only fuelled the speculation.
The break-up comes as a surprise to many, as 33-year-old Christy put her $5.8 million New York bachelorette pad on the market in November, just before the pair closed on two adjacent penthouses worth upwards of $8 million. Ed, however, may have had an inkling Christy wasn’t the one – sources say he held on to his own flat, a 2,400 sq ft loft he bought from the estate of John F Kennedy two years ago.
Ed, 34, and Christy had planned tie the knot last autumn, but postponed the wedding until later this year after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.
