Some of the world’s most famous supermodels took to the catwalk in Milan last week to pay homage to Gianfranco Ferré in a retrospective of the designer’s top creations. Naomi Campbell and Helena Christensen were just two of the heavenly bodies strutting down the runway, showing off 70 designs from Ferré's ready-to-wear and couture collections from 1984 to the present.
Gianfranco says that involving the models he’s “loved” in The Best Of Gianfranco Ferré was a must. “Their presence makes the evening all the more meaningful,” he explained. “And the fact that many agreed to come has filled me with happiness. It goes to show that my relationship with them was, and is, extraordinary.”
In addition to Helena and Naomi, Gianfranco’s “extraordinary” friends include models Esther Cañadas, Nadège, Pat Cleveland, Lynn Coster, Marpessa, Nina Heimlich and Fernanda Lessa, who were all thrilled to sport his creations on the runway.
The designer, who had just a few weeks to put together the show, admits it was difficult to cover a quarter of a century in relatively few designs. And though the crowd seemed to favour two creations – a sexy coral dress and a crimson evening gown, both worn by Naomi – Gianfranco politely declined to say which of the creations he likes best. “How could one possibly claim to love one child more than another?” he says.
The event, which also included a gala dinner, was the brainchild of IT Holdings, the firm which acquired the Gianfranco Ferré label last year.
