Of course, it’s the second largest media event in the world, and of course the focus is on serious creative contributions to the international film industry. But there’s no escaping the fact that for most of the media, the frivolous matter of who wears what tends to dominate coverage of the Cannes Film Festival. Not surprising really, especially as at this year the thigh was definitely the limit when it came to daringly slashed gowns.
A recently recovered Sharon Stone, back in stunning form after suffering a brain haemorrhage last year and serving on the festival’s grand jury, wore a dramatic leopardskin-print number – low necked and split to the thigh, naturally. The look was one also favoured by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the run-up to the festival when she attended the Laureus Sports Awards, in neighbouring principality of Monaco, apparently poured into a body hugging Versace number in basic black.
Back in Cannes, Woody Allen’s wife Soon-Yi, accompanying her husband to the screening of his new movie Hollywood Ending, also opted for black, as did Tea Leoni, Claudia Cardinale and Laetitia Casta. To accessorise her Moschino creation – an outfield choice for an event usually dominated by Chanel and Armani – Soon-Yi was also wearing 100 carats of Chopard diamonds.
The event’s mistress of ceremonies, The Beach’s Virginie Ledoyen plumped for with Chanel haute couture, while Hollywood Ending actress Tiffani Thiessen opted for Armani. Looking stunning in a silver grey gown with peplum basque was former Wonderbra model Adriana Karembeu, while Milla Jovovich also got the fashionistas scribbling with her striking silk cocktail dress.
Making a very different fashion statement was Patricia Arquette, who chose a floaty full-length gown in pastel rainbow hues for her trip down the red carpet. Meanwhile, Charlie’s Angels actress Lucy Liu was the epitome of sophistication in a tonally graded sheath suspended from a crisp mandarin collar
