The country of Iceland brings to mind images of glaciers, winter sports, arctic deserts and quirky pop singer Bjork. But the North Atlantic island is now making a name for itself in the world of style, with its offbeat fashion week premiere event, the three-year-old Midnight Sun runway show.
The sun never sets on the 1.45am morning presentation, which gained its name from the region’s nearly endless summer sunlight. And this year the collections were matched by the event’s striking backdrop – the black sand desert of Landmannalaugar, surrounded by the beauty of lakes and natural hot springs.
Up and coming names in design from around the world put their latest creations on the runway as the audience listened to live Icelandic folk music composed just for the gala. The UK was represented by Moi Tran and Catherine Hickerman of Bjork favourite Moi et Cat, who blended silk and cotton for draped creations in natural tones.
Tovale’s Na’ama Hassin from Israel presented a collection with all-white military-inspired pieces, including an outfit that was topped off by a helmet. Greenland’s Else Moller created an edgy line from seal and fish skins – a controversial choice elsewhere, but common in her country – dyed in bright shades of orange and red.
