London Fashion Week kicked off on Wednesday with an ultra-feminine collection by Ronit Zilkha, just the first of dozens of labels to show their wares during design extravaganza’s five, glamour-filled days.
The quintessentially British occasion has an international element this year, with designers from Spain, Japan, Denmark, Croatia, India, New Zealand and African nations all on the schedule. “There is no big song and dance here like there is in Paris,” says New Zealand designer Karen Walker. “I can be more low-key but still have the required impact.”
For style watchers interested in the underground talent, 28 designer labels are showing their collections independently, outside the British Fashion Council’s roster.
And the glitz isn’t just on the runway. Highly anticipated post-show parties include Matthew Williamson’s event at Whiteleys, where Kylie Minogue and Jade Jagger are expected. New mums Sadie Frost and Jemima French have reportedly invited a group of their high-profile chums – and their children of course – to tea and scones before their Frost French show, scheduled for Sunday.
Among those expected to attend are Natalie and Nicole Appleton with their music star partners, The Prodigy’s Liam Howlett and Oasis singer Liam Gallagher. “We’ve reserved places for Kate (Moss) and Jefferson (Hack),” said a representative. “And they’ve said they’re coming, so as long as their baby doesn’t arrive first…”
London Fashion Week runs through September 16.
