Just when all the fashionistas were in town, keeping an eye out for hot new trends at the New York fashion shows, hip designer Stella McCartney upped the ante by throwing a stellar bash to launch her first boutique in the Big Apple.

Outside the bright, roomy store, flashbulbs were popping non-stop as Stella greeted an eclectic crowd of fans including Gwyneth Paltrow, Justin Timberlake, Christy Turlington, Cyndi Lauper, Liv Tyler, Sara O’Hare and her husband Lachlan Murdoch, Tommy Hilfiger, Bono, and a flock of leggy models.

Gwyneth went for the uptown girl look, with a straight-cut blazer, urchin cap and – of course – a T-shirt by Stella. After playing to the cameras with her friend Stella, the Oscar winning actress went inside to enjoy herself, and ended up being the star turn when she took the karaoke mike at around midnight to croon Smokey Robinson’s Cruisin’. Amid the rapturous cheers and whoops that greeted her performance, she called Stella up to take the stage and the designer showed she also has another string to her bow by turning in a very respectable rendition of Lauryn Hill’s That Thing

“I threw a bit of a bender and I’m glad I did,” Stella commented later on what turned out to be the bash of the season. As for the boutique, which seems to be attracting as much attention as the clothes it contains: “We made a few changes and now I like the store,” says Sir Paul’s daughter. “I really think it works.”
