Paris fashion week kicked off with a touch of Hollywood glitz on Thursday, with some of the film world’s most glamorous young stars lining up to check up John Galliano’s latest collection for Christian Dior. Penelope Cruz, Christina Ricci and Claire Danes were among those seated front and centre to find out what the French fashion house has in store for spring 2003.
Fifty models in showgirl make-up and platform shoes showed off Galliano’s “Hardcore Glamour” collection, which included draped minidresses slashed by strategically-placed cutouts, military-style trousers in khaki silk and oversized blouson jackets paired with ultra-short skirts. The cutting-edge show came to a dramatic finale with the designer taking to the runway under a shower of metallic paillettes.
“I thought it was great, irreverent and beautiful in a circus-like, exaggerated, heightened way,” Romeo And Juliet star Claire Danes told Reuters. “For an event like this, it should absolutely be as over-the-top as possible.”
And the excitement didn’t stop, as Dior launched its new fragrance, Dior Addict, with an eye-popping extravaganza on Thursday night at the Lido cabaret on Paris’ famed Champs-Elysees. Actresses Claire and Christina once again made an appearance, while supermodels Eva Herzigova, Gisele Bundchen and Alek Wek danced the night away with the house’s effervescent designer.
