Supermodel Tyra Banks is stepping off the runway to put her experience to use – as an expert evaluating who has what it takes to be the next catwalk queen. The Coyote Ugly star has signed on to executive produce and judge a Pop Idol-like reality TV show, in which gorgeous contenders will live together as they compete for a modelling contract.
The hour-long programme, tentatively titled – what else? – Supermodel, "combines the excitement of competition and the real-life drama of people pursuing their dreams", says US network UPN's president of entertainment, Dawn Ostroff. A nationwide talent search is slated to seek out eight aspiring cover girls to star in the series.
Tyra, who is famed for her work with Victoria's Secret and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, will join a panel of experts consisting of agency representatives, photographers, and fashion magazine editors in sizing up the contestants. And as a 12-year fashion veteran, she aims to bring her own perspective to the show. "I want to demystify the glamour and show the challenges and hard work of becoming a supermodel," she says, "but in a humorously hip and edgy way."
