Supermodel Alek Wek was a standout figure at the Mercedes Australian Fashion Week's Autumn/Winter collections, taking to the catwalk apparently nonstop during her brief stint down under. The Sudanese-born stunner showed off the wares of no fewer than six designers, including Toni Maticevski, Claud Maus, Justine Taylor Made, Tina Borg and Woods & Woods.
Alek also closed the show for British designer Wayne Cooper, whose 1960s Paris-inspired collection featured a vintage evening dress accessorised with a riding crop, and mix'n' match separates in contrasting patterns.
Other collections in the three-day event included the dramatic cream-coloured jackets and handkerchief-hemmed skirts of Gwendolynne, a 30-year-old designer who trained under Katherine Hamnett, and the "plush poverty" creations by Italian designer Nicola Finetti, who warned buyers of his Eastern European-inspired pieces: "You have to have an attitude to wear my clothes."
Meanwhile, the menswear runway featured the up-and-coming male model who is tipped to be the next Travis Fimmel. Calvin Klein is said to be eyeing 20-year-old Michael Dean, who strutted his stuff for denim line Vicious Threads, as a future poster boy. However, a representative for Miami-based Michael says that any possible deal with the American label "is still a work in progress".
