Though she recently insisted she was on the mend after a breakdown, troubled supermodel Karen Mulder is now recovering in hospital after an overdose of sleeping pills.
The Dutch beauty, who had embarked on a singing career, had been in a coma for two days after a former boyfriend found her on unconscious on the floor of her £750,000 Paris flat. However, she is now said to be out of danger.
The incident is the latest in a string of ups-and-downs for the 34-year-old in recent months. The former Guess model hit the headlines in 2001 after making a series of declarations during the taping of a French chat show - which eventually never aired - including a claim that she had been raped by a member of her former agency, Elite, her father and by a member of the Grimaldi royal family. She later apologised for the allegations.
Two days after the interview Karen's family, concerned about her emotional state, checked her into a Paris clinic where she remained until March of this year. She was later reported to be off medication and back on track, launching a new career in music with a chart-topping cover version of Gloria Gaynor's I Am What I Am, making a dazzling appearance at the Christian Dior haute couture collections and reporting that she felt "like a different woman". "I am serene, full of energy and I've rediscovered the little girl inside me," she said in a June interview.
Karen's longtime friend, Elite models president Gerald Marie, who paid the struggling model's clinic bills last year, told the New York Post he was shocked about the latest development. "It's very sad," he said. "She had everything. I don't know how she lost it all."
