The biggest names of Paris Fashion Week did not disappoint this week, with Valentino and YSL Rive Gauche taking cues from the past and Karl Lagerfeld updating Chanel's classic silhouettes with a sexy twist.
Collarless square-cut jackets in Lagerfeld's "White Light" collection were made shorter and more fitted and his A-line skirts were leg-baring minis, paired with provocative leather legwarmers which stretched from ankle to thigh. The ladylike pieces came in cashmere and satin as well, with lace and fur detailing and, of course, trademark strings of pearls.
Feminine glamour was the name of the game for Valentino's pleated skirts, cocktail dresses and red carpet-ready gowns. Following themes from his recent spring couture collection, his pieces were the ultimate in luxury, featuring beaded embroidery and luscious fabrics such as cashmere, chiffon and tulle.
"Colour! Fashion! I love it!" YSL designer Tom Ford was heard to exclaim backstage during his show. The Rive Gauche collection was a parade of gorgeous hues, with velvet jackets and ruffled skirts coming in emerald green and cranberry as well as pale blues and purples. Ford also included a nod to the 1970s-era Yves Saint Laurent with bows, silk chiffon dresses and lingerie tops.
