Nicole Kidman proved her inimitable style when she picked up this year's best actress Oscar in a sheer-skirted Gaultier gown. And fashion world heavyweights in the US have now decided she deserves a separate gong in tribute to her elegance.
So the Council of Fashion Designers of America is set to honour her with their 2003 fashion icon award. The Australian actress joins some distinguished company by winning the award, because previous recipients include Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor.
"Nicole Kidman's style, both on and off the screen, has an undeniable impact on fashion," said CFDA chief Peter Arnold. "As an actress she has developed her many memorable characters with an innate understanding of the artistry of clothes. At the same time, she has elegantly established her own personal style and iconic presence worldwide."
Nicole has become well-known for her consistently impeccable taste at red carpet events. She wore a stunning black bustier dress, by Yves Saint Laurent, to the 2002 Golden Globes while her chiffon Chanel couture number, at last year's Oscars, was similarly exquisite. A strapless lilac gown, again from YSL, drew yet more nods of approval at this year's Globes.
The trophy will be presented to Nicole at a glittering ceremony in New York Public Library on June 2. She will be joined at the event by British designer Alexander McQueen, who is being honoured with the International Designer award.
