The inimitable Pamela Anderson will take centre stage at the forthcoming London Fashion Week, as she has been chosen to present the 2003 British Style Awards.
The gala evening, which is also known as the Fashion Oscars, is generally considered the climax of the week. Pammy is a controversial choice to front the event, as some fashion pundits have questioned her style credentials. The former Baywatch star is best known for her barely-there outfits made from denim and plastic. She recently posed in a cabbage leaf bikini to promote vegetarianism and she donned a see-through, split-to-the thigh number for last year's MTV Europe music awards.
The British Fashion Council is confident she is the right woman for the job, however. "Pamela is an internationally recognised personality with experience of hosting live shows," said chief executive John Wilson. "We believe she is well placed to promote this event." One of the stipulations of her contract is that she must wear a British design for the evening, but it remains to be seen who will be given that task of transforming the original beach babe into a chic London lady. "
The council has asked various British designers to come up with an elegant outfit for her to wear," said a spokeswoman for the event. "The chosen one will then work with Pamela's stylist to get the look right." So a more refined, sophisticated Pam will presumably be revealed when the lights go up at Old Billingsgate Market on September 25. Other big names presenting awards include Renee Zellweger and Sex And The City's Kim Cattrall.
