Stella McCartney has set her sights on Hollywood success, luring a roll-call of stars to the grand opening of her Los Angeles outlet on Monday night. And there was little chance of anyone getting lost, because she recreated the Hollywood sign with her name in huge letters outside.
Demi Moore, who arrived at the Beverly Hills event hand in hand with boyfriend Ashton Kutcher, was eager to praise the designer's new store. "It's a beautiful location," she said. "You can see the quality of her detail in everything. I'm in Stella now - or Stella's on me."
Other big names who turned out for the launch included Pamela Anderson, who wore one of Stella's designs to the British Style Awards last week, and actress Cate Blanchett.
"She's updated the concept of being womanly," said Cate, who was sporting jeans under a McCartney blouse. "I'm three months' pregnant, so she fits women of all shapes and sizes."
The day seems to have been a big success for Stella, though she was receiving some rather less positive criticism back home in Blighty. While Hollywood stars were raising their champagne glasses in toast to the designer, British fashion guru Jeff Banks said her success owed more to the McCartney name than anything else.
"Stella's clothes are very amateurish, but then because of who her old man is, it doesn't seem to matter," he declared. "Had it not been for having a very rich father, would she be getting all this praise? I very much doubt it."
