Jean-Paul Gaultier lends his talents to La Redoute

Jean-Paul Gaultier is bringing his signature styles to mail-order shoppers. The spring/summer 2005 catalogue for French company La Redoute features 20 garments and fashion accessories by the renowned designer.

Jean-Paul, who has always been known for pushing the style envelope, has struck a balance between his usual colourful approach and more standard Redoute items. His trademark stripes make their presence feel in everything from hats to heels, however.

"The idea was to take classic items from La Redoute and to add my signature with stripes or staples on a pair of jeans," the platinum-haired fashion maestro said, adding: "These are simple, basic products which I hope will be accessible to quite a few people."

La Redoute has a history of working with leading designers. Over the past 20 years Yves Saint Laurent, Sonia Rykiel and Issey Miyake have all created special collections for the French label.

The La Redoute/Gaultier partnership comes on the heels of the launch of a special collection Karl Lagerfeld designed for Swedish fashion giant H&M. Released last week in Paris and London the collection received contrasting reviews on each side of the Channel. Whereas shoppers in the French capital were spotted lining-up from six in the morning, with articles by the German designer selling out in a matter of hours, few people were on hand at the London Oxford Circus store to welcome Lagerfeld's contribution.
