The last 12 months have thrown up the usual celebrity sartorial trends – both flattering and otherwise. But for covering all bases in 2004 the ubiquitous baker boy cap was hard to beat.
In classic cream and teamed with a short topcoat and mini, it took on a regal twist as the head gear of choice for Zara Phillips when she attended church with the monarch on Christmas Day. And it wasn’t the first time the Queen’s granddaughter had sported the design, having given a chic suede version an outing a the National Hunt Festival in March.
On pop princess Britney Spears the traditional-shaped cap took on a very different aspect, adding a cheeky top note to a casual jeans and jacket combination in January. It was also a hit with fellow songbird Macy Gray who opted for a brown corduroy version when she attended the premiere of Around The World In 80 Days.
And it’s not just 20-something chart toppers who find the look works for them. Cap fan Yoko Ono sported a white cap as she presented the UK’s richest art prize in April.
The multi-tasking titfer wasn’t just popular with the ladies, either. Heart-throb Orlando Bloom also tried out a version of the look, choosing a charcoal grey headpiece to accessorise his barrow boy ensemble for the November screening of Beyond The Sea. Rocker Lenny Kravitz also decided it was appropriate premiere gear, topping off the studded denim jacket he wore to the July opening of SpiderMan 2 with a homely knitted effort in black wool.
