UK-based Singaporean designer Ashley Isham and Japan's Michiko Koshino helped get London Fashion Week off to a dramatic start on Tuesday with eye-catching creations that offered drama and elegance in equal measure.
The latest offerings from Ashley - who counts Zara Phillips, Kylie Minogue and Dido among his fans - were rich in theatrics, complemented by stunning make-up effects. And a gold floor-length dress drew gasps of amazement and cheers of approval from the gathered fashionistas.
Michiko, who also works out of the British capital, meanwhile lived up to her reputation for combining ethnic influences with urban chic. The caramel-coloured silk gown worn by one of her models was typical of Michiko's delicately-balanced style, but there were also plenty of more exuberant offerings, with the billowing shoulders attached to an understated cream jacket proving you don't need loud colours to make a big impression.
For those who prefer to fill their wardrobe with more subtle designs, Amanda Wakeley was sticking to the simple, sensual cuts that made her one of Princess Diana's favourites. Skin-toned hues dominated her show, with a series of floaty chiffon gowns bringing an ethereal flavour to the runway.
