Hot pink pants, tiny thongs, tight leather trousers – it could only be John Galliano. The Brit designer's explosive menswear show had Paris agape with his bad-boy themed collection, bursting with testosterone.
Attitude-laden models, greased up and tanned, prowled the catwalk in mafia fashion to the delight of the audience. One slick gangster look-alike donned black leather trousers, cap and embellished vest top while another modelled a leopard-print coat teamed with customised Galliano pink pants and white hat. Macho leather biker jackets mixed with black chiffon tuxes and fluorescent green trunks as the fashionista produced one of Paris fashion week's most outrageous shows so far.
Meanwhile, as Europe enjoys something of a tropical heatwave, other top designers have been getting us in holiday mood with Hawaiian-influenced menswear collections. Louis Vuitton signaled the trend with a runway display of hibiscus-print shirts, scarves and ties. "I think it created such a lovely spring and summery vibe without in any way being kitsch or silly," said Marc Jacobs.
Belgian designer Dries Van Noten also tapped into the Pacific island theme. Teaming his suits with flip flops gave a clue of what was to come, culminating in pale purple palm-print trousers, surf T-shirts paired with pinstripes and floral shirts.
At the other end of the spectrum from Galliano's rebel look, Stefano Pilati of YSL was busy promoting "romanticism and dandyism" for spring/summer 2007. The 40-year-old sent out models in elegant linen blazers, cropped trousers and slip-on moccasins and dapper cravats.
