While there are numerous enviable physiques at the top of the modelling game, it seems only one can be known as 'The Body'. Two of the world's most famous mannequins appear to be at loggerheads after representatives for both Elle Macpherson and Heidi Klum said their respective clients should not have to share the coveted title.
Australia's favourite catwalk queen has been known as 'The Body' for many years now, but in recent weeks her German colleague has also been associated with the moniker. A spokeswoman for Elle's lingerie company Intimates says there were some raised eyebrows when Heidi declared 'they call me The Body' at a recent launch party for her new bra.
"We saw that and we were like 'oh my god!'," confessed Melissa Edwards. "We were initially flabbergasted. We have numerous press clippings in the office referring to Elle as 'The Body'. Everything from Harper's Bazaar to Vogue to the recent Sports Illustrated calls her that. In terms of public record, the name belongs to Elle."
Victoria's Secret, which is marketing Heidi's 'The Body' bra, argues that no-one gets to keep the title forever, though, and the time has come for Ms Macpherson to step aside. "We have press clippings and newscaster reports for nearly ten years calling Heidi 'The Body'," insisted the firm's boss Ed Razek. "Who are we to argue with the media? There was 'The Body' before Elle and there will be another one after Heidi. Brigitte Bardot, Ursula Andress and Gisele Bundchen come to mind."
