London Fashion Week came to a triumphant close on Friday, with fashionistas' darling Marc Jacobs ending the ready-to-wear collections on a high. The presence of the American designer - who was showing for the first time outside his native New York - reinforced the perception that this year has marked something of a renaissance for London Fashion Week.
The New York-based designer, who describes himself as "a total Anglophile", says he's wanted to show in London for a long time. "I've always felt there was shared aesthetic between New York people and London people in terms of music, pop culture and trendy fashion. So I think this is a fun thing to do," he explains.And a host of celebrities, actresses and big hitters from the fashion world were on hand to check out the maestro's London Fashion Week debut. Sitting front row at the Claridge's hotel event were Legally Blonde actress Selma Blair, Bob Gelfof's stylish daughter Pixie and Lady Gabriella Windsor.
Also checking out the new offerings for next autumn/winter was supermodel Naomi Campbell, who was accompanied by the Sultan of Brunei's 24-year-old son Prince Azim. The prince is no stranger to celebrities, having lavished £2.9 million-worth of diamonds on songstress Mariah Carey last September September.Guests were presented with a collection loosely inspired by rose-tinted vision of Russian peasantry overlaid by a slick American twist. Vintage ice-skating chic ruled, with cosy blanket-check coats, striped woollen jumpers, furry hooded jackets and thick tights worn with ankle boots.
"It was cuddly and sexy, and I loved all the cream tights," commented Selma. "Marc gave a name and feeling to American design especially for adolescents and young women. He finally gave us something to wear," she added.
