It seems that Hollywood's highest paid actress is also the most stylish according to hellomagazine.com readers who crowned Nicole Kidman as the best dressed leading lady at the Oscars. Almost 8,000 votes were cast in the poll which celebrated Tinseltown's most glamorous night.

The gorgeous Australian actress topped the table for the second year in a row with 32 per cent of the vote, turning heads in a striking scarlet Balenciaga gown with a halter-neck bow detail. The Cold Mountain star faced stiff competition from best actress nominee Penelope Cruz, however, who came second in the hotly-contested vote with 28 per cent of respondents favouring her outfit. Penelope's strapless Versace dress was highly praised by fashionistas, and the Volver star's 20-carat Chopard diamond earrings certainly brought an extra sparkle to the red carpet.

And Penelope wasn't the only one dazzling on the star-studded night. Cate Blanchett, in third place, sparkled in a grey one-shouldered bejewelled Armani Privé gown, while best actress winner Helen Mirren came in at fifth place for her glittering gold Christian Lacroix gown. "I cried when I put it on," the 61-year-old actress said of her beautiful outfit. "It really is a work of art".

Other starlets went for simple, understated elegance, with fourth-placed Reese Witherspoon winning 10 per cent of the vote for her strapless, deep purple Nina Ricci number. Sixth place went to British starlet Kate Winslet, for her unfussy mint green Valentino gown, while Jennifer Lopez impressed in her elegantly draped number by British label Marchesa.
