Hard-working heiress Nicky Hilton has always preferred to let sister Paris have the limelight. But it was a change of scene at the weekend as the young fashion designer took centre stage at LA Fashion Week to launch her latest collection.

Chick By Nicky Hilton, her casual, younger range which she launched in 2005, shared the billing at the five-day event with several high profile names, including trendy NY label Heatherette and former Halston designer Randolph Duke.

But for proud parents Rick and Kathy, there was only one catwalk to be at. The couple looked on proudly as Nicky, who celebrated her 24th birthday with a party in Las Vegas earlier this month, took her bow on the runway, in front of My Name Is Earl star Jamie Pressly and Chinese actress Bai Ling.

Picking up on the strong nautical theme that's set to feature next summer, there were several high-waisted sailors’ trousers among Nicky's designs. But the main motif that ran through the New Yorker’s show seemed to be more influenced by her Big Apple roots, with a fun red and black apple print appearing on everything from summer dresses to cropped tops and hems of skirts.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Nicky, who also has her own chain of hotels, is set to launch her own retail stores in the Gulf region next May. The Nicky Hilton Boutique will sell her Chick line as well as her more luxurious label Nicholai and accessories ranging from sunglasses and watches to swimwear and handbags.
