The New York fashion glitterati, gathered for a sneak peek at Oscar de la Renta's creations for next autumn, could have been forgiven for thinking they'd been invited to view a spring collection.
The vibrant, jewel-like hues that dominated the catwalk at the special Park Avenue showing seemed to have been inspired by the balmy temperatures of an Indian summer.
Onlookers gasped in appreciation at the parade of models in striking floral prints and silk georgette dresses in plum, emerald and amethyst.
One of the show's highlights was a cobalt affair with fitted bodice and a full skirt that fell to the floor in dreamy swirls of ruffles. Like many of the designs it was accessorised with dramatic costume jewellery, creating the look adored by the Dominican maestro's A-list followers such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Garner.
There were plenty of examples of day-time chic, too, including pieces which seemed to have their roots in the South American pampas. Cropped bolero-style jackets and voluminous tweed skirts married rustic elements with the luxury associated with the de la Renta name.
