Traffic-light hues reign supreme on New York catwalks

If Wednesday's runway shows in the Big Apple are anything to go by, style-savvy ladies will be eschewing this season's cinched-in silhouettes in favour of more deconstructed shapes come autumn.

Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui and Alice Temperley were the latest big names to present their vision of late 2008 and, in keeping with the thigh-skimming creations on display earlier in the week, Marc by Marc Jacobs showed a high-energy collection which drew heavily on short, box-shaped dresses with exaggerated shoulders in hounds-tooth check. Vibrant colours were key, as models flashed past a celeb-filled front row which included Black Eyed Peas bombshell Fergie and fashionista Rachel Zoe, in Eighties-era neons.

High-impact colours washed over the Temperley runway, too. Here the emphasis was also on high hemlines and loosely-structured dresses. Among the highlights was a stunning lime silk mini-dress with faux jewel detailing.

At Anna Sui the autumn look featured a more relaxed silhouette, explored over a palette of colours softened from the block shades used by Marc Jacobs and Alice Temperley. Opening the show was current catwalk sensation Agyness Deyn, who led a minidress-focused parade in shades of plum and aquamarine.
