Currently ensconced in Milan, the international style set has been enjoying some varied fashion fare from two of Italy's most talented sons. Flamboyant Roberto Cavalli had infused his Just Cavalli collection with retro spirit, sending out vibrant flamingo prints and colourful tartan suits which hark back to the Seventies, while Giorgio Armani in contrast produced a largely black look focused on soft tailoring for Emporio Armani.
Both designers' lines cater for the younger client base, and Cavalli's glam-hippie creations will no doubt appeal to style-conscious youngsters. The Italian maestro described his 2008-2009 autumn/winter collection as being for young girls who rummaged through attics and junk shops to put together their highly individual style.
Fun flamingo motifs appeared on blouses, tights and a short smock, while the Seventies vibe was also played out in bright floral maxidresses, a deep purple fur coat and stripy lurex cardigans.
Armani, meanwhile, focused on jackets – they formed part of nearly every look – mainly fitted at the waist and in a variety of textures. Metallic leather or black velvet, pinstripe or oversize checks – there was something for everyone. And there were no end of comfortable-looking slouch trousers to go with them. For after dark the 73-year-old maestro delivered glitz. From mirror- and crystal-encrusted dresses to silver-sequined trousers and black sequined berets, Armani's talent for eveningwear shone through.
