Before Sunday night's prizegiving kicked off inside the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, the world's fashionistas were keeping a keen eye on the style statements being made outside. And the A list certainly didn't disappoint this year, as they sashayed their way down the red carpet in a stunning array of gorgeous gowns which matched the famous walkway.

Victoria's Secret model Heidi Klum, like many at this year's Academy Awards, opted to make her entrance in vibrant red. Her dramatic haute couture John Galliano dress sent flash bulbs popping, and was for a good cause, too. The silk taffeta affair was being auctioned off straight after the event to raise money for a heart charity.

The German beauty, who arrived with her singer husband Seal, wore her hair in a sleek up 'do to emphasise her bejewelled drop earrings. "I have snacks stored up here!" she joked, referring to her oversized bun.

Also choosing to dazzle in this year's hottest hue, this time in a floor-length satin George Chakra number, was last year's best actress Dame Helen Mirren - who was on presenting duties for the best actor gong. Starlet Anne Hathaway wore a draped Marchesa number and Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl turned heads in a one shoulder silk Escada column dress, while best actress nominee Julie Christie bucked the trend for floor-length frocks in a knee-length dress teamed with pink statement gloves.

Not all the leading ladies made a statement in red, though. Best actress Marion Cotillard looked every inch the Hollywood star in silvery-white as she gave a nod to her homeland - taking to the red carpet in a beautiful mermaid gown by French designer Jean-Paul Gautier. Renée Zellweger also channeled the silver chic look in her Carolina Herrera gown, which she teamed with Cartier jewellery.

Meanwhile, gorgeous Cameron Diaz was pretty in pink in silk tafetta Dior and best supporting actress Tilda Swinton opted for simple black in her Lanvin gown.
