The place for fashion conscious brides looking for inspiration for their big day was New York this week as some of the biggest names in US bridal wear presented their looks for autumn 2008.
And if the runway presentations were anything to go by next season's hottest wedding silhouette will be the fishtail. Oscar de la Renta included several strapless numbers in his collection, including a standout satin affair featuring layers of voluminous ruffles. Carolina Herrera echoed the trend with a simple, lace-covered creation, while luxury New York-based label Lara Helene exaggerated the mermaid look by adding a train.
Another key trend at the collections was the emphasis placed on back detailing. LA-based bridal maestro Monique Lhuillier offered a delicate lace-up effect, while Badgley Mischka added embroidered edging for extra impact when all eyes are on the rear of the bride's gown. Vera Wang had also rung the changes with straps tying at the lower back to create a knotted effect on a beautiful cream number.
For brides looking beyond the traditional veil there was a host of innovative alternatives. Top hats, wide-brimmed straw titfers, and chic pillboxes swathed in netting were just a few. Oscar de la Renta conjured up a senorita bride with a floor-length lace train cascading from an outsize Spanish-style headpiece, while Carolina Herrera accessorised her luxurious Victorian-inspired gowns with caps festooned with feathers.
