His name has been synonymous with glamorous gowns for four decades, so at a glittering evening premiere of Valentino: The Last Emperor, it was only natural a host of A-list ladies should don fabulous, floor-length gowns in Valentino's honour.

A stellar turnout, including Eva Herzigova, Clare Danes and Diane Kruger, all dazzled in neutral hues at the exclusive soirée in Venice on Thursday.

High-octane glamour was the order of the day as Charlize Theron and Tamara Beckwith added their star power to proceedings, too.

And Elizabeth Hurley, who has a cameo in the intimate documentary which follows Valentino's life up to his retirement in January, put in a typically chic appearance in a Greek goddess-inspired gown.

However, the Italian maestro himself reserved his sartorial praise for a Hollywood star who wasn't present. Julia Roberts. "I have to be very sincere," he revealed. "The person that makes me feel very happy, also because (she) chose vintage, was Julia Roberts. When she got the Academy Award... I was very excited to see her in my dress. It's very important for stars to like your clothes."
