While men's fashion tends not to reflect the breadth of variety associated with womenswear, the autumn/winter collections on display in Milan this week spanned the gamut from classic slacks and sweater combos at Gucci to the outre outfits shown by Alexander McQueen.
Gucci's chief designer, Frida Giannini, had taken inspiration from the New Wave movement of the Eighties. She sent tailored suits down the runway alongside skinny jeans paired with fitted jackets, ties and casual knits. The result was a rock'n'roll dandy look.
Alexander McQueen had taken a completely different approach, embracing a boxing theme in his new collection. Entitled McQueensberry Rules, in homage to the 19th-century aristocrat who codified the sport's rules, it encompassed Edwardian-style suits and other tailored pieces, accessorised with leather aprons and boxing gloves and boots.
Meanwhile Donatella Versace had focused on luxury, presenting a collection featuring cashmere cardigans and mink-lined parka jackets across a palette of crisp winter white, icy blues and warming touches of red. Standout was a new take on the suit, the Versace interpretation of which embraces the male form with defined shoulders and large lapels.
