There was high drama, passion and elegance in spades as haute couture week continued in Paris this week with French style guru Jean Paul Gaultier and Lebanese deigner Elie Saab unveiling stunning new collections.
Like Lacroix earlier in the week, Gaultier took inspiration from Spain for his vision for this spring and summer, adding a gothic twist to the Senorita look with flamenco gowns featuring lashings of lace, veiled skirts and fishnet sheaths.
Standing out among sheer, lace-swathed dresses fashioned from Spanish scarves was a design based on the shape of a giant abanico or fan - an essential ladies' accessory on the peninsula during the 19th century.
Meanwhile at Elie Saab, always an awards ceremony favourite, there was a chance to speculate which designs we may be seeing at next month's Oscars. The new collection featured pastel shades, plunging backs, and voluminous goddess gowns, several of which could be putting in another appearance at the Hollywood bash.
Also key themes in the collection were layers, with one dramatic silhouette rustling with metres of ruched fabric, and Swarovski crystals which spangled on bodices and floor-sweeping trains.
