Not only did she take home her country's first best supporting actress Oscar, Spanish screen star Penelope Cruz also scored a fashion first at this year's Academy Awards. The Vicky Cristina Barcelona talent came out streets ahead of the competition in our online vote to find the most stunning gown of the Tinseltown event of the year.
Penelope's ivory Balmain gown, which set off her sultry looks to perfection, won praise from fashion commentators the world over and garnered thousands of votes from our readers.
At close of voting 28 per cent of readers thought it warranted the top spot. It was a deserved win for Penelope, who has been runner up in our Oscars style stakes for the past three years running.
The battle for second place was closely fought, with Anne Hathaway and Kate Winslet neck and neck all the way. In the end there was only one per cent in it - Anne's glittering Armani column took the silver with 16 per cent, while best actress gong winner Kate came in third with her chic black and grey Yves Saint Laurent creation.
Natalie Portman, stunning in pale lavender tulle Rodarte with Swarovski detailing, took fourth. Silver-hued affairs completed the top half of our poll with best supporting actress nominee Marissa Tomei, shimmering in a one shouldered gown from Versace Atelier, in fifth place, and Miley Cyrus, who placed sixth, flying the flag for the younger generation in a tiered, crystal-embellished design by Zuhair Murad.
