Watch the Galliano show Video footage from the Elie Saab, Hermes and Chloe collecttions John Galliano's ready-to-wear show in Paris was never going to be an understated affair. The enfant terrible of British fashion didn't disappoint, unveiling a dramatic collection which drew on elements of Tsarist Russia.

Under a veil of snowflakes models sashayed down the runway in a collection of peasant blouses, embroidered skirts and nip-waisted military coats. Highlights included a voluminous, pale blue double-breasted jacket embellished with silver chains and feathers.

The designs of Jean-Charles De Castelbajac were equally eye-catching. The Morrocan designer, who's a favourite of Madonna, presented a series of quirky jersey dresses. One featured prints of a characters from The Muppets while another bore the likeness of Michael Jackson as a child, with a fluffy top section representing his hair.

At Hermes John Paul Gaultier delivered an aviation-themed collection. Propellers mounted on plinths roared into life at the end of the catwalk as flying jackets, skinny trousers and long leather trench-coats in shades of tan, grey, black and beige, made an entrance.

Other standout pieces in the collection, which was accessorised with leather helmets and antique goggles, included a gold-hued, one shoulder dress.

The asymmetric look was also key in the autumn/winter proposals of red-carpet favourite Elie Saab. The Lebanese designer's offerings included a dramatic one-shoulder evening dress in electric purple, accessorised with a single glove in the same shade. Dayware, in a muted palate of cream and beige, included high-necked gowns and textured fabric minidresses.

French fashion house Chloe took the Eighties and added an extra feminine twist for next season with long, billowing chiffon dresses, suedette tailored shorts, silk bib front blouses and jumpsuits. Eveningwear looks included black velvet dungarees paired with a cream silk blouse and a gold braid belt.
