Miniskirts pervade the wardrobes of Europe's stylish royal ladies

In recent years, long, elegant gowns have dominated palace fashion across the continent. But now, many royal ladies are trading them in for a leggier look, even as the chilly throes of winter set in.

Spain's fashionable Crown Princess Letizia is the latest to embrace the trend, looking lovely and feminine in a black mini with tights for an event in Madrid on Wednesday. And the former newsreader has followed in the footsteps of her fellow European princesses. Earlier this week, Princess Victoria of Sweden attended a gala evening in Paris wearing a black mini-dress, while a few days before Princess Beatrice donned a royal blue mini for a night out in London with boyfriend Dave Clark.

The ladies of Monaco have incorporated the miniskirt into their closets, too. Princess Stephanie was spotted showing off her legs in a shorter skirt at a charity auction on Tuesday, perhaps taking inspiration from her sartorially savvy niece, Charlotte Casiraghi, who has sported the look several times, including at the principality's National Day celebrations this year. Princess Diana may have revolutionised royal fashion trends in the nineties with some sassy, feminine looks, but today's princesses seem to have made the sexy miniskirt one of the staples of their closets.
