There were no shrinking violets at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night. Whether opting for sleek and sexy silver dresses or gowns in bold and bright hues, Tinsletown's leading ladies dressed to impress as they gathered at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.Epitomising old-school Hollywood glamour at its very best was Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks.

She turned heads in a low-cut, custom-made Johanna Johnson gown, made from silk satin and embellished with Swarovski crystals. "It was the only dress," the curvaceous flame-haired star said of her selection. "I tried it on and it was perfect. "British presenter Cat Deeley chose a similar style for her red carpet foray.She showcased a stunning Monique Lhuillier gown, with silver embellishment and a white tulle train.30 Rock star and new mum Jane Krakowski, Prime Suspect's Maria Bello and Christina's Mad Men co-star Elisabeth Moss completed the line-up of stunning silver sirens, while The Good Wife's Julianna Margulies dazzled in a luminous white Armani Prive gown.

Without a doubt, the colour de jour at this year's ceremony was red..British beauty Kate Winslet led the way in a scarlet Elie Saab number that accentuated her gorgeous frame, while Glee star Lea Michele looked sexy and sophisticated in a stylish Marchesa gown with a draped back.Also looking red hot on television's big night were Vampire Diaries beauty Nina Dobrev, Kerry Washington, sensational in a Zuhair Muhad dress and Friday Night Lights actress Adrianne Palicki.Modern Family's Sofia Vergara, meanwhile, went for a slightly softer shade in an orange Vera Wang number.

The other hue very much 'in vogue' was electric blue.The Kennedys' actress Katie Holmes set the tone with her minimalist Calvin Klein dress, cinched at the waist with a delicate silver belt.Glee actress Dianna Agron looked flawless in an indigo Roksanda Ilincic gown while Clare Danes was on knock-out form in a strapless sequinned Oscar de la Renta Resort gown.
