She hit the headlines with some unscripted remarks about her husband's teammates. But on Monday Gisele Bundchen returned to what she does best – making waves in the fashion world. In what marks a rare runway appearance, the leggy Brazilian beauty stormed the catwalk at Alexander Wang's New York presentation along with Karolina Kurkova, Carmen Kass and Shalom Harlow.

They posed in front of individual boxes in a mirrored maze before tearing their masks off and turning to face the cheering crowd.

Gisele said backstage that the designer had "asked me and I'm very happy I was able to be here." In keeping with the theme of the show, 'suffocation', the models were sent out in high leather collars and fishnet turtlenecks that covered half their faces.

The offerings were decidedly androgynous, with sharp tailoring spiced up by leather panels. The dark, dramatic feel of the show was similar to the Diane Von Furstenberg presentation, which took its inspiration from “the art of seduction”. "We wanted to be very seductive,” Diane said at the show which was attended by pal Oscar de la Renta, Solange Knowles and Barbara Walters. “And seduction led to rendezvous which is a meeting with expectation and mystery. The idea is to glorify the woman and make her sexy and proud of her body.

“There are some dresses that are very tight, with big coats - so you go to the rendezvous and you are not quite sure. You are wrapped into the coat, and you may or may not take it off." The collection was sophisticated, simple and sometimes smouldering, with jersey dresses in dark colors and fun cocktail numbers in bright, tropical shades of pink, lime green and bright blue.
