Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen sealed their style credentials at fashion’s equivalent of the Oscars on Monday night. The former child stars-turned-fashion moguls fought off stiff competition from top names Marc Jacobs and Proenza Shcouler to scoop Womenswear Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer of America Awards. Sporting their own designs, the pair looked delighted as they took to the stage to pick up the prize for their six-year-old label The Row.
"I'd like to thank you -- and you, too," said newly brunette Mary-Kate, turning to her twin as they accepted. Beaming at each other, a purple-clad Ashley affectionately lay a hand on Mary-Kate's face. Johnny Depp was also lauded for his look, becoming the first ever male to be named Fashion Icon by the CFDA for his “personal and eclectic sense of style”. The actor wasn't there to pick up his trophy, but friend and director John Walters accepted on his behalf. The prestigious style event boasted a star-studded guestlist that included A-list actresses Jessica Chastain, Kate Bosworth and Zoe Saldana.
And Victoria’s Secret angels Doutzen Kroes, Candice Swanepoel and Erin Heatherton put in typically stunning appearances. Other winners included Billy Reid for Menswear Designer of the Year and Reed Krakoff for Accessories Designer of the Year. Tommy Hilfiger received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Anna Wintour presented the designer with his awards, saying: "I admire him as much for who he is as what he has done."
