An anonymous buyer is now the lucky owner of a slice of royal history. On Tuesday, a bidder shelled out just under £7,000 – more than three times their estimated value – for two hats worn by the Duchess of Cambridge. The headpieces hired by Kate were listed for sale by Kerry Taylor Auctions last month with an estimate of £1,000-£1,500.But they ended up fetching £3,224 and £3,720.
The first item to go under the hammer was a black and white feathered disc by Philip Somerville that she wore to watch her then boyfriend Prince William be made a Knight of the Garter at a ceremony in 2008. And the second is the 'Aurora' organza crown, which was created by Get Ahead Hats, a farmers' wives co-operative.It was the finishing touch to the beautiful brunette's outfit at the wedding of William’s close friend Harry Meade in October 2010. It was the first time the couple, who were already secretly engaged, were photographed side by side. They looked so happy that royal watchers correctly guessed they would soon be making a special announcement. Kate had hired both of the headpieces from Get Ahead Hats in Reading near her family home in Berkshire, for around £100 each.
