Golden Globes 2013: Leading ladies channel sirens of the sea in mermaid gowns

January 14, 2013

It is one of the most glamorous events in the showbiz calendar. So it’s no surprise that the big screen’s leading ladies went all out for the Golden Globe Awards 2013, stepping out in an array of stunning gowns that shimmered and shone under the blaze of hundreds of flashbulbs. And a style trend was soon to emerge, with a host of red carpet beauties channelling sirens of the sea in fishtail gowns. What’s more, the starlets had all chosen to pair their under-the-ocean dresses with old Hollywood, sides wept hairstyles.

Leading the mermaid brigade was Jessica Alba, who was showing off her slim physique in a peach Christian Dior dress. The yummy mummy completed the look with a matching lip, a cute furry clutch and a diamond necklace. Also working the mermaid trend was Megan Fox, who was as sultry as ever in her Dolce & Gabbana dress, of which she said: "It’s tight and lacy. That’s all there is to it." But the actress revealed that it is her husband Austin Green who chooses her red carpet looks, saying: “He picks my dresses most of the time because I trust his opinion more than anyone.”

Kelly Osbourne, meanwhile, took the trend one step further with the gown’s oyster hue that perfectly offset her trademark purple locks. And Amy Adams was simply stunning as she posed in her pale Marchesa creation.

A host of A-list beauties had opted for a more standout hue, sizzling in scarlet ensembles. Jennifer Lawrence, who is the face of the French fashion house, wowed in fire-engine red Dior. Having earlier admitted that she is 'just not really a 'fashion' person', the actress was quick to make a self-deprecating quip when asked what designer she was wearing. " [endif]

Dior haute couture," she said, "I don’t really know what haute means but I had to say it!"  Quirky New Girl star Zooey Deschanel went for maximum impact in a crimson Oscar de la Renta gown that featured a full skirt. But it was new mum Claire Danes, that stole the scarlet show. Just one month after giving birth, the Homeland star was showing off her incredible post-pregnany physique in traffic-stopping Versace. Other starlets had kept it simple with classic black. Kate Hudson was breathtaking in a super sexy Alexander McQueen gown with a plunging neckline and sparkly gold detailing at the neck and waist.

George Clooney’s girl Stacy Keibler, meanwhile, showed off her model-like figure in tight, strapless Armani Prive. And Nicole Kidman had also chosen black and gold for the grand occasion.

But an awards ceremony wouldn’t be complete these days without a few stars having their very own Angelina moment.

Eva Longoria, who had vamped it up in black lace Emilio Pucci and smokey eye make-up, showed off a tanned leg with a thigh-high split. As did British beauty Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who showed off her model credentials with her revealing black gown. And Halle Berry was another leading lady to flash a glimpse of thigh in printed Versace.

With a fresh-faced appearance that belies her 46 years, the actress looked fabulous as she put her fantastic physique on display in the daring number that oozed the sex appeal the Italian fashion house is renowned for. Other beauties that wowed were Taylor Swift, who had eschewed her usual pale gowns for an aubergine-hued Donna Karan number, and Adele, who made a sensational post-pregnancy return to the spotlight in black Burberry.
