Seeing squares: Celebs fall for Louis Vuitton's checkered print

January 21, 2013

It's the holy grail of fashion right now and a trend that the style world is far from doing by halves – the square is everywhere. The rise of the chess-inspired look began in Paris Fashion Week, when Raf Simons' first ready-to-wear show for Dior was staged in a giant white cube built especially for the occasion that featured a series of interconnecting white rooms linked by square windows. This was followed up with Louis Vuitton's presentation, where paired-up models in squares-clad ensembles descended down the escalators and stepped onto a giant checkerboard catwalk in white and yellow.

And it seems it wasn't only fashionistas that fell in love with the French fashion house's checked collection – a slew of celebs have been spotted hitting the red carpet in the bold print, . Kristen Stewart was first to adopt the trend, donning a black and white colourblock playsuit that showed off her enviable pins for a photocall at the Kumamo Shrine in Tokyo, Japan, to promote The Twlight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. Black pumps and smokey eyes finished off the monochrome look to perfection. Django Unchained star Kerry Washington, meanwhile, attended a photocall for the Osar-nominated film in Berlin wearing a white and ivory calf-length checkered frock. The bold print divided fashion critics' opinion but we think the actress looked stunning in the demure dress, and the headband added a cute dimension to the ensemble.

Kirsten Dunst was next to join the square brigade, stepping out at the 2013 Art of Elysium Heaven Gala in California in monochrome. She had opted for maximum impact in a full length version of the print. And it even featured a square neckline to emphasize the effect. Neutral make-up and soft, blonde waves ensured nothing detracted attention from her show-stopping gown. But HELLO! Online's best-dressed of the checkered bunch has to be the beautiful Jessica Alba, who stole the limelight at the Golden Globe Awards After Party in LA looking super classy in a sequin black and white dress. A slick of red lipstick added a perfect pop of colour to the ensemble and black pumps finished off the elegant look. What do you think of the square trend? Leave your comments in the box below.
