Victoria Beckham was given a standing ovation and huge applause after presenting her more economic, ready-to-wear line Victoria on Tuesday, just 48 hours after well and truly silencing any fashion critics with her flawless new mainline collection that she unveiled on Sunday evening. With a decidedly androgynous "boy-meets-girl" vibe, masculine tailoring and feminine silhouettes were combined to create a stunningly classy collection. And, in the quest for the "ultimate nonchalant chic", garments featured hidden vests that provided a perfect fit and fall of the dress.
Monochrome, the trend du jour, dominated, with grey and navy complementing the subdued shades while splashes of berry and copper lifted the colour palette. Speaking about the girl she had in mind when designing this line, Victoria says: "I feel like the Victoria, Victoria Beckham girl this season is an engaged intellectual with a sense of humour. In reference to the total lack of trousers in the collection, she continues: "She can wear anything with aplomb yet she chooses the simplicity of a dress. She marches rather than walks, she drinks espresso, and she devours books and art and film. And she is subversively sexy without trying. "I'd like to meet her…" Victoria concludes.
On Sunday, the designer unveiled her mainline collection at New York's Public Library and garnered acclaim from the highest ranks of the fashion industry. Luxury department store Harrods described the line as "the personification of style and modernity", and Italian Vogue contributor Giovanna Battaglia, summed up the unveiling in one word: "Brava".
