Celebrity stylist reveals red carpet secrets

Celebrity stylist Gemma Sheppard reveals to HELLO! Online the secrets behind getting red carpet-ready…Body shape is the most important thing to consider when choosing a dress…Part of the job of the stylist is not to simply choose a beautiful outfit - what they need to consider is how that actual dress will look on that particular body and will they both complement each other in the best possible light. For me someone who gets it right every, single time is Tilda Swinton, she takes risks with her androgynous look of clean lines but keeps it chic and minimal. The effect is a strong statement look. In part, this is what the stylist and celebrity are trying to achieve, a 'look' that becomes synonymous with the star — in effect, an extension of their brand.

Underwear is of utmost importance…

As a stylist, my attention to detail is all over. But, you're not going to get a good finish if you haven't started with a great base layer. You don't want to have any unsightly lines nor an issue with transparency on fabrics under the glare of the lights and the cameras.

Stars are groomed to perfection ahead of the event…

Think manicures, facials, waxing, eyebrows etc etc… Stylists also have to work with the hair and make-up artist to ensure that every detail is covered and that the dress works with both.

There is the occasional disaster…

One of my clients was due to go on air and moments before, a huge bunch of lilies was delivered to the dressing room, which deposited their pollen on the star's cream, raw silk Bruce Oldfield gown! There was an audible gasp in the room… I cleared the space, wrapped my hand in sellotape and used gentle touches on the fabrics to remove every last trace. It worked, and the show went on!

Choosing the right dress is a long process…

There is a lot of media attention on the nominees so they need to make sure every element of their outfit is managed and prepared. Their teams behind the celebrity work very hard to achieve their overall look. At the same time, you will have designers doing their homework, scouting for stars that can wear their gowns in the best possible fashion. It is a collaborative process; the golden equation is the talent looking their absolute best and the designer winning rave reviews for their designs and choice of muse.

Jewellery is a must…

Especially for the Oscars – this is your chance to crack out the bling! I love a look that is finished and set off with really phenomenal jewellery – on Sunday night, we will see the crème de la crème of jewellery designers in all their glory – Cartier, Van Cleef, Boucheron, Chopard.
