Why Kate won't put Princess Charlotte in dresses

September 24, 2015

Fans hoping to see Princess Charlotte dressed up in little frocks may have to wait a little while longer. The Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, is unlikely to dress her little daughter in dresses until she's one year old, according to Kate's favourite children's clothes designer Rachel Riley.

The Duchess of Cambridge might not dress Princess Charlotte in dresses for a year

"Because they're a traditional family, I'm sure that she'll wear babysuits for the first year," Rachel told People. "And then only when she's walking will she then move into dresses."

While Prince George has been melting hearts around the world in his adorable outfits including blue jumpers and shorts, Rachel admitted that she doesn't think Charlotte will be wearing two-piece ensembles until she's a lot older.

"Even in terms of separates, I don't think she'll be wearing separates until much later," she said.

The designer's creations are a firm favourite of Kate's, who has previously headed to Rachel's store to buy outfits for Prince George – most notably, the adorable white smocked shirt and red shorts he wore for his little sister's christening in July.

The little royal regularly causes a spike in sales as fans try to recreate his outfits, following in his stylish mother's footsteps - Kate's outfits have been known to sell out within minutes of being identified, in what has been dubbed 'The Kate Effect'.

"They are absolutely trendsetters," Rachel said of the elegant family's style. "When you look at them, they're just gorgeous, their clothing is gorgeous. The royals stay relevant and modern."

It's not the first time that the designer has spoken about the way the Duchess dresses her children. After Charlotte's christening, the designer revealed she had spotted many similarities between the 33-year-old and Princess Diana.

"Diana dressed Prince William in a very traditional way, even more traditional than Kate does with Prince George," she told The Mail On Sunday. "George always looks gorgeous, too. His clothing is very classic but suitable for today, that’s the look they are trying to achieve. It’s a more modern version of William’s look when he was a little boy."
