The Prince of Wales has been a style icon in his own right throughout his royal career - from his tailored safari suits to slogan sweaters and his favourite Ray-Ban sunglasses.

But he still managed to surprise us with the announcement that he's teamed up with luxury retailer Net-a-Porter to launch a fashion collection - which, made with entirely sustainable materials, is the result of a training programme championed by The Prince's Foundation.

The 'YOOX NET-A-PORTER for The Prince's Foundation' collection gave students - or 'Modern Artisans' - from the UK and Italy first-hand training in the skills needed to bring a collection to market, launching online on 12 November.

By blending modern technology with artisan techniques such as ruching, weaving and hand smocking, sustainability is at the heart of the collection - a cause that Prince Charles is hugely passionate about.

The landmark collection was designed by Italian students at the Politecnico di Milano, and made at Dumfries house by British trainees.

The result is a collection that is both chic and timeless - with styles that we could see Charles' daughters-in-law Meghan and Kate stepping out in.

"The Modern Artisan project has been the ideal opportunity for me to hone my skills, learn to work as part of an international team and experience the beginning-to-end process of designing and making a sustainable, luxury collection."

One key piece is the double-breasted merino wool and cashmere camel coat, £1,295, and the Prince of Wales checked cashmere trouser suit, £1,990, which was no doubt a hit with His Royal Highness.

The Prince told The Telegraph of his own approach to fashion: "For me, I have always tried to use my own wardrobe to highlight great craftsmanship, whether that is in the manufacture or, more often these days, the repair of an item. I have always believed in the 'Buy once, buy well' philosophy, so the more I wear them, the more sustainable I hope I become!"
