They split up in 1995, but Alex Kingston has not talked about her relationship with her ex-husband, actor Ralph Fiennes – until now, that is. In a magazine interview, the actress, who plays Dr Corday in the hit TV series ER, said: “We have no relationship of any kind. I haven’t seen any of his films since we split and that’s fine by me.”

The 38-year-old, who was devastated when the Schindler’s List star told her he was leaving her for Francesca Annis, his co-star in a stage production of Hamlet, spoke of her shock. “If you’re the one who’s been dumped you will feel like your life is over. You’re hurt and angry that your partner seems to have moved on so easily from you, and that can be extremely painful.”

“I was feeling worthless,” she continued, “that I would never find anyone else as good as my husband – which is ridiculous – but I had so little self-esteem. Divorce is awful but it is also something I don’t regret happening to me because it has shaped who I am now.”

Alex is now happily married to German journalist Florian Haertel, and they have an eight-month-old daughter Salome, who was conceived after the couple underwent numerous fertility treatments. Her husband kept her spirits up when Alex had problems conceiving. “Florian was always saying: ‘If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t matter. It’s you I chose to be with.’”

But when she found out that she was pregnant, Alex burst into tears. “It was the greatest news I had ever heard,” she recalls.
