Gwyneth Paltrow gave Grammy winner Sheryl Crow a helping hand the other night when she accompanied the rocker at an impromptu concert at New York’s trendy bar Cutting Room. The Shakespeare In Love stunner’s vocals have been a topic of conversation since she scored a number one hit in Australia in January with a song she recorded for the soundtrack for the disappointing film Duets.
Gwyneth sang background vocals on six songs at the club, including a cover of the Who’s Squeezebox and Sheryl’s latest, It’s Only Love. Delighted patrons included Sheryl’s current squeeze Kid Rock and the Oscar-winning actresses’ parents. Fuelling rumours of a romance, Gwyneth’s co-star from The Royal Tenenbaums, Luke Wilson, is said to have cheered the loudest.
The 28-year-old’s voice caused an industry-wide stir last year when she sang during a sketch on the popular US comedy programme Saturday Night Live. “Gwyneth’s songs are as interesting for their sheer novelty as for the discovery that she has a surprisingly good singing voice,” one music veteran said. A slew of recording contracts reportedly went out, but the actress decided she’d rather not be the next Jennifer Lopez.
She did however record two tracks for Duets, which surprisingly spawned two hit singles Down Under; her duet Cruisin’ with Eighties stalwart Huey Lewis went to number one, and her cover of Bette Davis Eyes peaked at number three. Despite appearing on Crow’s next disc, Gwyneth denies she has designs on a music career.
