Radiant in a figure-hugging white gown, Nicole Kidman braved the red carpet solo Monday night in New York for a charity screening of her new film, Moulin Rouge. Looking confident and poised, the actress showed little sign of her recent troubles, which have included a miscarriage and a very public separation from her husband Tom Cruise.

Remaining characteristically tight-lipped about the end of her marriage to the Mission Impossible star, the 33-year-old Australian said: “I guess it’s better to have loved and lost than not have loved at all.”

U2 frontman Bono, designer John Galliano and Donald Trump were among the audience at the screening of the Baz Luhrmann-directed musical, which was disrupted briefly when the Paris Theater screen suddenly went dark. Nicole joked with the crowd during the impromptu intermission, saying, “I’d sing for you, but I only sing in character.”

Following the screening, Vogue editor and fashion icon Anna Wintour threw a fundraiser bash complete with an auction of Moulin Rouge-style gowns to benefit AIDS research. Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein lost out on a $24,000 Helmut Lang dress, and to chants of “Don-ald! Don-ald”, Trump outbid himself, paying $30,000 for a Versace gown.

Next month Nicole is expected to appear in Cannes where the film is scheduled to open the prestigious film fest.
