Director James Cameron is scheduled to make a titanic voyage himself, travelling to the International Space Station (ISS) on a Russian ship some time before 2003. Cameron hopes to film a 3D IMAX film and a TV special in space and is currently working with Sony technicians to develop a state-of-the-art camera capable of capturing such film.
“Astronauts are remarkable people and good at their jobs,” the Oscar winner said. “But unfortunately their job description does not include the poetry and passion necessary to convey to the Earthbound what it means to live and work in space.”
“My mission is to rekindle the public’s passion for space exploration and to make money doing it,” Cameron said. “It is our goal to do nothing less than revolutionise the way the citizen of planet Earth thinks about the human exploration of space.”
And while the True Lies director and proud new father is eager to make the trip, he is willing to wait for the US and Russian astronauts to iron out the details. “I am going to wait until the partners work things out and then go at an appropriate time and I’ll even train,” says Cameron.
Former Nasa engineer Dennis Tito became the first tourist in space in late April. However, his trip has reportedly upset US astronauts aboard the ISS; some say they’ve had to “babysit” Tito to protect the station. Tito reportedly paid Russia $20 million to fulfil his dream.
